Vassar women receive All-East Region honors

Vassar freshman Colleen O’Connell was named All-East Region Rookie of the Year, while Cydni Matsuoka earned All-East Region Second Team honors.
Poughkeepsie - After leading the Vassar College women’s basketball team to its most successful season in school history with an 18-10 record and a second consecutive Liberty League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, sophomore Cydni Matsuoka earned All-East Region Second Team honors and freshman Colleen O’Connell was named the All-East Region Rookie of the Year on Tuesday.

O’Connell is Vassar’s second-straight All-East Rookie of the Year and Matsuoka is Vassar’s third-straight All-East Region Team selection.

• Cydni Matsuoka
Matsuoka, a Liberty League First Team selection this year, led both Vassar and the Liberty League in scoring (15.3 ppg), assists (4.6 apg) and 3-point field goal percentage (.407). Matsuoka led the Brewers in scoring in 18 of 26 games and scored in double figures in 24 of 26 games. She also was second on the team in field goal percentage (.443) and was second best in the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.62). From the point guard position, she ranked 18th in rebounding (5.8 rpg). Matsuoka was named the League Player of the Week seven times, including four weeks in a row (1/23 - 2/13).

Last year, Matsuoka was named the 2011 National Rookie of the Year, the 2011 Liberty League Rookie of the Year and selected to the Liberty League First Team and the All-East Team.

A 2010 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, she lettered three years in basketball and two years in volleyball. A three-time First-Team Delta Valley Conference selection, Matsuoka led her team to four Delta Valley Conference Championships and two San Joaquin Sectional Championships. Also a three-time Sacramento Bee All-Metro Honorable Mention selection, she won the Coach’s Award as a sophomore, the Hustler Award as a junior, and her team’s MVP Award as a senior.

O’Connell adds All-East Region Rookie of the Year honors to a list of accolades that includes Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year honors and Liberty All-Rookie Team honors. She ranked third in the Liberty League in rebounding (9.6) and led the league in defensive rebounds (6.92). She set the Vassar single game record with 21 rebounds against William Smith. O’Connell led Vassar in rebounding 15 times in 25 games and earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors four times. She had eight double-doubles on the season, four of which came in league play.

O’Connell lettered three years at Immaculate Heart Academy for head coach Steve Silver. She was twice named All-Big North United and earned 3rd Team All-County as a senior. Her team won back-to-back North Non-Public A State Championships her sophomore and junior year. She helped the team to three consecutive league championships her sophomore through senior years. As a captain her senior year, she earned the Investor’s Savings Bank Academic Excellence Award and IHA Scholar Athlete Honors.
