POUGHKEEPSIE – Rising red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart of the Marist men’s basketball team will be playing for the Virgin Islands in the FIBA Americas Centrobasket Championship, which will take place from Aug. 1-7 in Nayarit, Mexico.
Hart and the Virgin Islands team will open preliminary round competition on Friday night against Mexico. The team will play a total of four games in this round, and will next face Puerto Rico on Saturday, Bahamas on Monday and El Salvador on Tuesday. The semifinals will take place on Wednesday, and the championship will be decided on Thursday.
Hart is coming off a season in which he was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and was a finalist for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year. He was named MAAC Rookie of the Week seven times, and averaged 14.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Hart ranked in the MAAC’s top 15 in seven statistical categories.
Hart is looking to add to his success in international competition. He previously represented the Virgin Islands at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in June of 2012. He had the highest scoring average in the tournament at 23.4 points per game in a total of five contests.
