NEW PALTZ – The Newburgh Free Academy Goldback’s defeated the defending champion Kingston 72-60 last Saturday. In doing so, NFA has secured its first Section 9 Class AA championship title in three years.
When it was all over, NFA senior Donovan Fields had scored an impressive 36 points. The new career-high was evenly spread between each half.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Goldback’s felt confident that they could beat Kingston. After all, they had beaten the defending champs twice in the season. But taking down second-seeded Kingston wasn’t going to be easy.
Newburgh dominated the first half, taking a 33-26 lead. That lead would continue to grow in the third quarter. Kingston would however, battle back and tie the game at 48 going into the fourth quarter.
Kingston’s Pat Dorrian would do his best to keep Kingston in the game, but Newburgh’ Fields was determined to win. As NFA’s lead continued to grow, the capacity crowd began to cheer and give that familiar "New-Burgh" chant, signaling victory.
Newburgh now moves on to the first round of state play on Wednesday to face Mount Vernon. Tip-off at SUNY New Paltz is 5:30P.M. The winner of that game will head to Binghamton University Center to take on Union-Endicott.
