GENEVA – The Vassar College men’s basketball team outscored Liberty League No. 1 Hobart College in a strong second half but could not make up for the huge first half deficit as the Brewers fell 76-59 in Bristol Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Freshman guard Erikson Wasyl led the short-handed Brewers, tying his career high 16 points. The Brewers were without top scorers junior forward John Donnelly, senior guard Jon Herzog and sophomore forward Alex Snyder. Sophomore forward Luka Ladan and junior forward Lucas Wager’s inside presence was also taken out of the Brewer game plan.
The loss makes the Brewers 5-12 and 1-7 in the Liberty League. The Statesmen move to 11-6 and 7-1.
Hobart jumped out to an early lead with a 20-4 run, and eventually finished the first half up with a 41-16 lead over the Brewers. Vassar, however, fought back with a 27-18 second half run to bring the score closer at 59-41.
Hobart’s offense rebuilt their lead to 27 points at 4:31, 70-43, with a fast break layup from Michael LaValle. The Brewers went down fighting with another run that cut the Statesmen lead down to 15 points as time expired.
