NEW PALTZ - The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team (1-0) opened the 2013-14 season on Saturday with a 9-0 shutout victory over SUNY Oswego on the North Tennis Courts.
Senior Paige Munroe and junior Devin Tracy moved up to the No. 1 doubles flight this year, and opened the season with an 8-1 victory over Oswego’s Olivia Knierman and Haley Miller. Junior Jessica Schmidt and sophomore Laura Tierney took over at No. 2 and won their first match, 8-0, over Lauren Stall and Jessie Flaim. Freshmen Olivia Ammirati and Veronica Paikin paired up for their first collegiate doubles match at flight three and defeated Leslie Usherwood and Maddy Klatt, 8-0.
Ammirati, jumping into the top flight in her first season, got off on the right foot by defeating Stall, 6-1, 6-2. Munroe dropped Miller at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while Schmidt swept Knierman at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. Tierney also had a clean slate, defeating Flaim at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Allie Starke took care of Usherwood at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in her first-ever fall season match. Freshman Elizabeth Palmer rounded up the dual match with a victory at No. 6 over Klatt by set scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
The Hawks will face all three of their SUNYAC East Division rivals next weekend in Plattsburgh. They take on SUNY Cortland on September 6th, then SUNY Oneonta on September 7th before facing off with host SUNY Plattsburgh on September 8th.
