POUGHKEEPSIE - The Vassar College women’s swimming and diving team fell 159-135 to cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon at Kresge Pool.

“New Paltz brought out great races in everyone,” said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. “They just had a bit more fire power.”

Freshman Julia Cunningham broke her own record in the 200-Yard Butterfly with a new time of 2:08.07. She came off the blocks and instantly established a two-second lead after the first 50 yards, leading New Paltz’s Maggie Heaton with a split time of 28.77. Cunningham also took first in the 200-Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:14.67. Her time was over seven seconds faster than second place finisher Ann Fici. Cunningham nearly had a seven second win in the 200-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:28.89.

One personal record was blown away on Saturday at the other end of the pool in the diving well. Junior Karlin Gatton may have only taken third on the 1-Meter board, but she set her new personal best at 165.96 points in six dives. Her old record was 40 points lower.

Maya Pruitt also had a huge personal best on the shorter board with a new six-dive score of 207.90. It was about a 30-point improvement. Pruitt took first in the event and again on the 3-Meter with a score of 189.17. Sophomore Alison Sagliocca took second on both boards.

The Brewers’ first win of the day came in the 100-Yard Backstroke when Milee Nelson out-touched New Paltz’s Casey O’Connor by .57 seconds with a time of 1:04.11. Sophomore Ana Kuo (Floral Park, NY/Townsend Harris) was close behind the pair with a time of 1:06.91 for a third place finish.

Senior McKenzie Quinn and junior Juliana Struve took second (1:14.19) and third (1:16.84) in the 100-Yard Breaststroke.

Other highlights on the day were made in the 100-Yard Butterfly with Maryam Pourmaleki’s second place, 1:03.60 swim. Liz Balter took second in the 50-Yard Freestyle (26.45) and third in the 200-Yard Backstroke (2:22.29, season best).

The Brewers (1-2) will next travel to Union College for the Liberty League Championships on December 6 and 7. New Paltz (3-0) will travel to East Meadow, NY for the ECAC Winter Championships from Friday, December 6 through Sunday, December 8.
