PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers scored two touchdowns in a span of two minutes, 21 seconds midway through the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 deadlock and the Scarlet Knights went on to defeat Army, 28-7, Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium.

Gary Nova completed 14-of-17 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown, and Jawan Jamison rushed for 90 yards on 22 carries to help the Scarlet Knights improve to 8-1 on the season.

Trent Steelman ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 26 totes to pace Army (2-8). Larry Dixon added 81 yards on six touches and Raymond Maples chipped in 58 yards on 13 rushes for the Black Knights, who were held below 300 yards rushing for the first time since September 29.

Army dominated the first three quarters, but two blocked field goals and a pair of fumbles inside the Rutgers 20-yard line kept the Black Knights from taking advantage on the scoreboard.

Army took the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards in 16 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Steelman capped the drive when he dove into the end zone from the one-yard line.

After holding Rutgers on the Scarlet Knights’ first offensive possession, Army drove the ball into RU territory but Daniel Grochowski’s 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

Rutgers took over following the missed field goal and proceeded to drive 74 yards in 11 plays to tie the score at 7-7.

The game was tied 7-7 following the third quarter, but Rutgers took a 14-7 lead midway through the final stanza when Nova hit Brandon Coleman with a 31-yard touchdown pass to the right corner of the end zone.

Army was forced to punt on its ensuing possession and a bad snap resulted in Rutgers taking over possession on the Black Knights’ one-yard line. Savon Huggins scored on a two-yard run two plays later to give the Scarlet Knights a 21-7 cushion with 6:28 to play in the contest.

Rutgers put the game away when Duron Harmon returned a fumble 73 yards to pay dirt with 40 seconds left.

Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires and Geoffery Bacon each posted 12 tackles apiece to lead the Army defense.

Army will return to action on Saturday, November 17, when the Black Knights host Temple at Michie Stadium in the team’s home finale. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
