Yonkers - The Yonkers Gladiators youth football and cheer program, founded by the Nepperhan Community Center eight years ago, is a program for boys and girls (7-14 years old) separated into five teams according to age and weight. While the teams have all had success, the Jr. Midget team recently reached a great milestone.
After winning nine games this year, and losing just once, they recently won the Division I 2011 Super Bowl Championship of the Big Apple Youth Football League on November 12th. The team will now compete in the United Youth Football National Championships in Tampa Bay, FL. This same group went to Florida last year after winning the Super bowl in the Pee Wee division, and were the first youth football team in Yonkers to play for the American Youth Football National Championships. The Mitey Mites team is also going to championships.
The Yonkers Gladiators’ dedicated coaches, Garfield Heslop, Ralph McKenley and Michael Bailey, volunteer their time everyday, taking kids back and forth to practice. They also monitor the boys in their academics, assisting them with tutoring when they are struggling.
"What began as just a mere thought years ago is now a success known by people all over the country," said Bailey.
