Newburgh Free Academy cross country runner Gianna Frontera originally went out to Colorado for 20 days to attend an elite training camp. It’s the kind of camp that needs to see reference letters and your running record before they will accept you. 90 campers - both boys and girls - attended this special event.
Following the camp, 12 of the 90 athletes were invited to stay for an additional two weeks to attend an extended training experience. Frontera was among those chosen. All told, she will have been out there a total of five weeks.
Athletes attending the camp must run through tough conditions at 10,000 feet elevation. For Frontera, the thin air of the Rocky Mountains has only helped to improve her game. There are even college recruiters flying out to see her run.
