NAACP applauds the United States House

The NAACP applauds the United States House for passing an inclusive reauthorization to update and improve the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

From NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous:

"Women across the country have come to depend on the services and protections offered by the Violence Against Women Act," stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. "At a time when so many extremist politicians are seeking to roll back decades of hard-won protections and rights, this renewal is an important victory."

From NAACP Senior Vice President of Policy and Advocacy and director of NAACP’s Washington Bureau Hilary Shelton:

"The reauthorization of the VAWA ensures a continuation of vital, lifesaving programs and protections," stated Hilary Shelton, Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy and Director of NAACP’s Washington Bureau. "NAACP supported the passage of the VAWA in 1994, and its reauthorization in 2000 and 2005, and has seen the VAWA improve the landscape for victims in the United States who once suffered in silence. Victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking have now been able to access services, and a new generation of families and justice system professionals have come to understand that domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking are crimes that our society will no longer tolerate."
