Science Day at Columbia University

NEW YORK - Recently, Newburgh Enlarged City School District students from South Middle School and Temple Hill Academy attended the Girls’ Science Day (GSD) offered at Columbia University in New York City. The special event is a daylong program of hands-on experiments for middle school girls led by graduate students and faculty at Columbia University. GSD was designed to stimulate an interest in the area of science and perhaps inspire some students to pursue careers in the field. Experiments throughout the day included the topics: Air Pollution, Lasers Going Through Jello, Breaking Bones, Making Slime, Brain Tricks & Implicit Associations Test and Chemistry Detectives. All the students were given a demonstration by the Columbia graduate students of the volcanic process on Havemeyer Lawn.
