Newburgh Prep Cites Two Citizen Scholars of the Month

Andre Boone, January Citizen Scholar

NEWBURGH – Two students from Orange County have been cited for their leadership and academic excellence at Newburgh Preparatory Charter High School. Andre Boone, 19, of the City of Newburgh, and Ashley Reilly, 17, of Cornwall, were named Citizen Scholars of the Month for January, the school’s Executive Director, Tom Fitzgerald, announced.

"Andre and Ashley have demonstrated the kind of positive attitude and behavior that inspires all of our Newburgh Prep scholars to strive daily to become the best students and the best citizens they can be," Fitzgerald said.

Students with good grades and good attendance records who follow the school’s dress code and code of conduct are considered for the award. They are chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration.

Boone, who attended Newburgh Free Academy last year, said he enrolled at Newburgh Prep at his father’s suggestion. "I was passing my courses in high school but I was doing just enough work to get by," Boone said. "When my dad told me about this school where the classes are smaller and the teachers have time to give you more individual attention, I decided to try it. I’m glad I did."

He said he is able to talk to his teachers not only about school but about his other interests. "I like the fact that the teachers here are young, and they can relate to me on many levels," Boone said.

Reilly agreed.

"The teachers here not only talk to you about the subject you’re learning but also about your life plans, and they offer their advice," she said.

Reilly officially dropped out of Cornwall High School last spring during her sophomore year but said she had been skipping numerous classes for at least a year before that. "My grandfather told me about Newburgh Prep, and it’s been great," said Reilly, who is maintaining a 94 average. She has already passed the English and Algebra Regents exams and is on schedule to graduate in 2015. She plans to earn a college degree and become an English teacher.

Boone has an 89 average and is also scheduled to graduate next year. He plans to go to college and major in sports management.
