NEWBURGH – Mount Saint Mary College recently held a pinning ceremony for 76 nursing graduates.

Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, president, gave an invocation and blessed the pins, which were presented to the graduates by chosen family members and friends.

The Mount Saint Mary College nursing pin contains the college’s motto, "doce me veritatem," which translates as "teach me the truth."

Mount professors Jeanne Roth and Andrea Ackerman offered the graduates words of encouragement and advice for their upcoming nursing careers.

The class of 2013 is "ready to make the transition from student nurse to graduate nurse," said Roth. "As you receive your nursing pin today, let it serve as a constant reminder not only of the excellent education you have received at Mount Saint Mary College, but of the desire, dedication, and the commitment you have made to serve the healthcare needs of others."

Jennie Rouleau of Bristol, Conn. gave her reflections at the ceremony.

"We made it. We’re nurses. How cool is that?" said Rouleau. "I am truly honored to be a part of this nursing class."

She added, "This is the beginning of a beautiful and honorable career."

Rouleau’s pin was presented by her mother, Christine, and her father, Mark, both nurses themselves. Nora Ames of Titusville, NJ was pinned by her stepmother, Jodi, and her father, Warren.

"My pin is dedicated to all three of my wonderful parents, without whom I would not be receiving it at all," she said. "My mom, before she passed away, showed me the meaning of compassion and selflessness. And my parents, whose unrelenting support and love are the best gifts."

Daniel Beers of Montgomery, NY was pinned by his grandmother, Harriett Beers.

"She is the smartest person I know, always showing her love and support while encouraging me to follow my dreams," he explained. "She has given me inspiration that will always follow me on my journey through life."

The newly-minted nurses recited "A Nurse’s Prayer," which speaks of dedicating one’s life to helping others.
