Habitat Completes 75th House in Newburgh

Ian Rieger of Rieger Homes presents the keys to the Spearman family as Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh dedicated the Spearman and Martinez homes on East Parmenter St. in the City of Newburgh on Saturday, June 14, 2014 to complete the week long Builders Blitz. NEWBURGH - Habitat Newburgh has completed its 75th home in the City of Newburgh.

With the assistance of the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley, Habitat Newburgh was able to build two, four bedroom homes in just five days as part of the national Builders Blitz program. The homes, located at 26 and 28 East Parmenter Street were their 74th and 75th houses.

Cathy Collins, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh, once again called upon her "builders dream team" of Angelo Ferrante of Hudson Valley Contracting Group; Ian Rieger of Rieger Homes; Andy Stahl of Hearthstone and Bob Colucci of Ultimate Homes. Collins also enlisted the help of IBEW 363 to take on all the electrical work.

For five days, hundreds of volunteers could be seen at the East Parmenter Street location focused on achieving the goal to have two houses completely built by donated labor and services. Contractors, suppliers and the general public worked side by side to achieve this goal.

Many were overwhelmed at the generosity of donations of lumber, concrete, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical supplies, drywall, and insulation needed to complete the two Energy Star rated attached 4 bedroom homes.

"The Home Builders Blitz would not be possible without the tireless effort of the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley," said Cathy Collins, during the dedication on Saturday.

"We are grateful for the partnerships developed through this miraculous project that will allow the Spearman Family and the Martinez family to realize their dream of owning a safe, decent, and affordable home." Collins continued, "I have to thank all of our employees, our wonderful volunteers and everyone who contributed to the success of this project. Without each and every one of them, this wouldn’t have been possible."

"When I agreed to do this in 2006, I only considered the accomplishment of building two in five days," said Ferrante. "But I found out quickly that it was a lot more than two homes; I made friends and bonds for life and that’s why I got involved in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th – and now for the 7th and 8th homes."

"This has been a very enriching experience for us so far," said Rieger. "Both Habitat and the Builders Association are made up of some incredible talent and when you couple the two, it’s clear that only great things will happen."
