Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument left in the dark

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument in the City of Newburgh - which was to remain lit at all times - has been left in the dark for over a year and a half despite numerous requests to have its light replaced. For the Hudson Valley Press/Ed McCarthy

NEWBURGH - Recently, the City of Newburgh had its Illumination Festival celebrating the innovations of Newburgh. Pictured above is a side view of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument, for which many in the community and clergy worked very hard to make a reality for all. Pictured is also the light pole and light that was to keep the monument illuminated at night. The bulb has been burned out for over a year and a half, and numerous requests have been made for the DPW to replace it, to no avail.

Also on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., near Nicoll Street, is the Abraham Lincoln Monument which was promised a light at the time of its dedication by former city manager Richard Herbek in 2009. The light has still not been installed or illuminated.

Let’s keep Newburgh illuminated!
