West Point diversity team hosts potential students

WEST POINT - Under the tutelage of the new Diversity Officer, MAJ Betty Myrthil, the Diversity Admissions team at West Point conducted an Orientation/Visitation Program from November 15-18, 2012. Over the three days, top diversity candidates were escorted by Fourth Class Cadets and Outreach Officers.

Using funds from the AOG Orientation/Visit endowment, the Diversity Admissions team was able to bring 15 diversity candidates to visit West Point. This program helps to educate parents and candidates, and alleviates concerns and common misconceptions about West Point and the Army. The Orientation/Visitation Program continues to be a tremendous asset in recruiting diversity candidates to attend USMA and USMAPS. Between 2007 and 2011, over eighty-five percent of the diversity candidates that had the opportunity to visit West Point through the Program, when offered admission to the Academy, choose West Point.

Upcoming events in 2013 include:

• 2013 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Camp: Beginning January 15, 2013, the Admissions Office and the Center for STEM Education will begin accepting applications for the 4th Annual STEM camp at West Point. The STEM camp is a competitive program designed for rising 7th and 8th grade (current 6th and 7th grades) students and is scheduled for May 28-31, 2013 at West Point. Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to, a short essay describing the student’s interest in the West Point STEM workshop, scholastic record and teacher recommendations. • 2013 Summer Leaders Experience (SLE): SLE is offered to rising high school seniors (current juniors) competitive for admission to West Point. It is a fast-paced program consisting of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics that gives candidates the opportunity to experience life as a Cadet. Candidates must complete the "Candidate Questionnaire" Part I of the USMA application for admission. The SLE application window is open Jan. 8th - April 1, 2013. Candidates may choose one of two weeks, June 1-7 or June 8-14. Sessions fill up quickly so candidates are encouraged to apply early. To learn more, visit
