NEWBURGH - On September 13, 2012, the Newburgh Police Department (NPD) bolstered its ranks as four new City of Newburgh Police Officers were sworn in. Of the four new officers, three are Spanish-speaking, and all four of the men are City of Newburgh residents.
The new officers are Brian Southworth, Charles Cruz, Alvaro Farias, and Ricardo Rivera.
Newburgh Police Chief Michael Ferrara commented, “Having these additional officers academy-trained and then assigned to the city streets of Newburgh will be a nice boost to reinvigorate and enhance NPD’s accredited professional patrol force.”
He added, “We are trying hard to do more than just answer calls and write reports here at NPD. We are incident based and officers constantly identify and document root causes in an attempt to reduce crime. It’s a holistic approach we believe in that requires a commitment by all department members at full authorized strength.”
City Manager Richard F. Herbek said, “We are pleased to welcome four new officers to our Police Department, especially ones who are familiar with the City of Newburgh, have community ties, and are invested in it as residents. It is an added bonus that three of the new officers are Spanish-speaking, which will enhance our Department’s ability to communicate with a majority of our population.”
The newest members of Newburgh’s Finest began the Police Academy on September 17, 2012.
