Zendaya to headline free Saratoga concert

Disney Channel star Zendaya, hot off her run as a contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, will be headlining a free family concert as part of the 33rd annual Open House at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced that Dancing with the Stars runner-up and Disney Channel sensation Zendaya will headline a free family concert during the 33rd annual Open House at Saratoga Race Course on Sunday, July 14, 2013. Open House will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the concert beginning at 3 p.m.

The concert, which is the first to be held at the historic racing venue in recent memory, comes in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first organized thoroughbred race meeting in Saratoga, which took place over the course of four days in August 1863.

The annual day of family fun and attractions will be billed as the Opening Ceremonies for the 150th anniversary season at Saratoga Race Course, which officially opens its gates on Friday, July 19th for 40 days of racing through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd.

Open House will feature an all-new high-level event this year with a free family concert from top performing artist Zendaya, star of the hit series Shake It Up! on the Disney Channel.

Admission to both Open House and the concert, including reserved Clubhouse and Grandstand seats, is free. In honor of the 150th anniversary season at Saratoga Race Course, TicketMaster ticket handling fees will be limited to only $1.50 per ticket.

"Saratoga Race Course is a truly tremendous sporting venue that deserves an anniversary celebration worthy of its stature in the community. Hosting a free concert with Zendaya allows us to kick off the season in a grandiose way while staying true to our tradition of affordable family fun during this annual pre-season celebration," said Rodnell Workman, vice president and chief marketing officer for NYRA. "We look forward to once again welcoming families through the gates as we launch a memorable anniversary season at Saratoga."

The milestone free concert will feature an exciting, high-energy performance headlined by Disney Channel star Zendaya, who will be joined on-stage by a full band, five dancers and three back-up singers against the backdrop of the track.

The multi-talented actress and recording artist received national acclaim this spring during her runner-up performance on season 16 of Dancing with the Stars, where she was the first contestant of the season to land a perfect score from the judges. Zendaya has become a mainstay among female entertainers due to her role on the popular Disney Channel series Shake It Up! which is currently in its third season.

Her debut album is slated for release this fall on Hollywood Records and she is touring select cities throughout the summer season.

Tickets for free seats in the clubhouse and grandstand can be reserved via Ticketmaster. Tickets will be available by mail and at will call on Thursday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, July 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 14, the day of the event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Reserved Seats Box Office on Union Avenue at Saratoga Race Course.

In addition to reserved seating, the track apron will be available for non-ticketed general admission on a first-come, first-served basis. No blankets or chairs will be allowed.

This year’s event will continue the longstanding tradition of supporting local community and non-profit organizations through nominal fees for various games and activities and the sale of discounted food and beverages.

The backyard will play host to a variety of activities including pony rides, inflatables, face painting, caricatures and mini golf, among other games. Kids can also take part in an equine-themed art contest in celebration of the 150th anniversary for the opportunity to win a named race and present a trophy in the winner’s circle during the summer meet. Activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, patrons can get a good glimpse into the inner workings of the track with free backstretch tours every half hour beginning at 11 a.m. at the Clubhouse entrance.
