NEWBURGH - Friends of Newburgh Crew held a highly successful fundraiser, "Oktoberfest at Pamela’s on the Hudson", on October 11, which brought the Crew Team much closer to their goal of having a 2012-2013 season, according to Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo.

"Oktoberfest was our first large-scale fundraiser. It was attended by almost 90 people. We were very grateful to have so many members of the community come out and support us, especially Dawn Fucheck, president of the Newburgh Board of Education and Pamela Resch, vice-president of the Board of Education, who also provided the venue and delicious German food for this event. Both are former crew moms and have been especially supportive of our efforts," said LoBiondo.

Friends of Newburgh Crew, the not-for-profit set up to reimburse the School District for the expenses of the Crew Team, said that after the event, they had raised approximately $45,000.00, putting them 2/3 of the way to their goal of the $60,000.00 needed to fund the 72-member team for the 2012-2013 season.

"We were delighted to have the support of our City of Newburgh officials as well," said Team Mom LoBiondo, "including Mayor Judith Kennedy, City Manager Richard Herbek, and Councilperson Regina Angelo, who made an especially generous donation. We had a wonderful German accordionist, Lenny Feldman, who also ended up making a large donation to the Crew Team. We had a fabulous silent auction, with thousands of dollars of community-donated merchandise and baskets, from Jets and Army football tickets to original artwork; and we were pleased that Mayor Kennedy had the winning bid on a handmade NFA Crew Team locket. It meant a lot to our athletes to see the support from people in the community, from neighbors to power brokers."

"What a difference a few months makes," said Coach Ed Kennedy, head coach of the NFA Varsity Crew Team. "This time six months ago, our kids were walking around without hope for a future team. Now, they know we are getting close to our fundraising goal; and that the Mayor of Newburgh will be wearing a locket with NFA Crew on it. That is priceless." There was no rest for the athletes, however. "The kids were back out there selling raffle tickets at events on Saturday and Sunday afterwards. And about 20 of them rowed in a 5,000 meter Regatta on Sunday. They’ve been fundraising and practicing relentlessly. We intend to make the community proud that they supported us come Crew Season."

Next up for the Crew Team’s Fundraising efforts: "Our last event of the year and our last chance to raise the money for our Crew Season will be our Holiday Open House and Arts and Crafts Auction at the River Grill on December 15th," said LoBiondo. "We hope to be celebrating reaching our fundraising goal and being able to announce that the Crew Team will indeed have a 2012-2013 season for 72 athletes."
