Central Hudson warns customers about scam

POUGHKEEPSIE - Central Hudson is alerting local residents of a scam involving forged Central Hudson checks. Several incidents have been reported to law enforcement officials by recipients from outside of New York State who received phony Central Hudson checks in their name to pay for items posted for sale on websites such as Craig’s List. At times, the checks were written for a higher amount than required and were accompanied by instructions to cash the check, retain part of the proceeds for the purchased item and deliver the remaining amount to a third party.

These forged checks have no value. In most cases, the recipients’ out-of-state banks suspected fraud and refused to cash them.

"Residents should be wary of anyone attempting to pay for goods and services with a forged Central Hudson check," said James P. Laurito, President of Central Hudson. "Authorized checks from Central Hudson are issued directly to our vendors and suppliers for legitimate utility business purposes only."

Central Hudson has alerted the federal authorities of this recent scam. Customers who believe they may be victimized should contact their local law enforcement agency.
