Central Hudson to offer free A/C recycling and rebates at event

POUGHKEEPSIE - Due to the overwhelming customer response in past years, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation will once again be offering customers rebates of $50 to $100 for replacing and recycling old, working air conditioners with new Energy Star® units.

The program will start with an Air Conditioner (AC) Turn-In event in the Sears parking lot located at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013.

"Central Hudson’s AC Turn-In event makes it easy for customers to save on their energy bills and protect the environment," said James P. Laurito, President of Central Hudson. "Simply drive to the designated station in the Sears parking lot in Poughkeepsie and an attendant will remove your old, working air conditioner from your vehicle and provide you with a certified form to receive a rebate for the purchase of a new Energy Star unit. This recycling program reduces waste by encouraging our customers to replace their inefficient air conditioners with newer models that use less energy and better protect the environment, while ensuring their old units are properly recycled," said Laurito.

All of Central Hudson’s residential customers are eligible to recycle and receive rebates for up to four air conditioners per residential account. In addition to the Poughkeepsie Galleria, the Sears locations at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston and Newburgh Mall in Newburgh will be accepting units from May 25, 2013 through September 12, 2013.

"After turning in your old, working air conditioner for recycling at a participating Sears location and receiving a proof of recycling certificate, simply purchase a new, Energy Star through-the-wall or window air conditioner from any retailer before September 12, 2013. Submit your form with the certificate and receipt to receive a $50 rebate for your new, Energy Star window air conditioner or $100 for through-the-wall unit," said Laurito.

Energy efficiency programs offered since 2009 by Central Hudson will save participating customers a combined $10.9 million dollars per year on their utility bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 160 million pounds annually.

"Thousands of our customers have found real opportunities to reduce their energy use, help protect the environment and save money by taking advantage of Central Hudson’s energy efficiency programs," said Laurito.

Central Hudson’s energy efficiency programs are offered to residential, commercial, institutional and municipal customers. "Using energy efficiently just makes sense, and our energy efficiency programs make it easy to save right away," said Laurito. Examples include:

• Rebates up to $600 on residential high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and up to $1,200 on commercial heating systems;

• Payments of $50 for turning-in for recycling older working refrigerators or freezers; and

• Up to $400 in incentives for purchasing high-efficiency heat pump water heaters.
