The Hudson Valley Press Internship Program

Introduction

The Hudson Valley Press Internship Program offers an outstanding opportunity for motivated college juniors, seniors, new (or recent) graduates and graduate students to gain real world experience working closely with the Editor and staff of this multi-media company.

 

There are a number of internships available depending upon course of study and interest. [ ie. Information Technology, Business, Graphic Design, Journalism and Marketing].

 

Interns work from 10 to 13 weeks and may work on a number of projects. For example, in the area of journalism, interns will cover a number of areas, such as: government, economic development, education, entertainment, health, and sports.  The number of interns accepted varies based on staff needs.  Intern responsibilities will range from administrative work to research and field work. 

 

All interns should be ready to work hard, learn quickly, and cooperate with a diverse team serving the people of The Hudson Valley area.

 

Eligibility

To be considered for an Internship, students must be:

  • a US Citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States;
  • 18 years of age or older; available to work at least 12 hours per week;
  • currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate, or graduate; and
  • hold a 2.8 GPA or higher.
  • Transportation helpful


Application Process
In addition to the attached application, students must submit the following documents to the Internship Director by the application deadline:

  • cover letter explaining why you are seeking an internship;
  • resume;
  • unofficial transcript(s) from every college/university you have attended;
  • a writing sample of 1,000 words or more [for journalism interns]; and
  • two letters of recommendation

* Late or incomplete applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.


Selection Process

Upon submission of a completed application, the chosen applicants will be selected for an interview with a member of the staff.  After the preliminary interview, the applicant may be selected for an interview with one or more staff members that will best utilize her/his talents or interests.  Applicants will be notified of their selection on a rolling basis.  In the case of the fall semester, students will be notified before school begins.


Compensation

Interns are not compensated, however some colleges and universities provide stipends, tuition waivers, or temporary loans to help cover internship expenses.


Housing

Unfortunately, the Hudson Valley Press cannot provide housing for our interns.  Web sites with apartment and sublet listings and local universities’ housing offices may be helpful.
